Accessing a headless Mac mini

I have always loved the idea of the Mac mini. It brings me back to the old days of computing when you would buy separates with an eye to upgrading the display, keyboard or parts of the computer unit later on. I have just moved out of the country for the year and am working as a digital nomad. I have brought along my MacBook Pro but I thought that it would be fantastic to also bring my Mac mini, which packs more performance punch and is pretty small relatively speaking. Here's how I setup a configuration that allows me to access my 'headless' Mac mini using my MacBook Pro, getting the best of both worlds: mobility and power.

My hardware setup is as follows:

  1. Both MacBook Pro and Mac Mini are running macOS High Sierra 10.13.4.
  2. Connect to the Internet on the MacBook Pro as normal using DHCP over wifi.
  3. Go to Settings > Network. Configure the Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter:
    • Configure IPv4: Manually
    • IP Address: 192.168.2.1 (make sure it's on a different subnet to the wifi adapter)
    • Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
    • Router: leave blank
    • DNS Server: 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4 (the Google DNS servers)
  4. Go to Settings > Sharing. Configure Internet Sharing as follows:
    • Share your connection from: Wi-Fi
    • To computers using: Thunderbolt Ethernet
    • Turn on Internet Sharing.
  5. Go to Finder. You should now find your Mac mini listed under the Shared section in the left-hand panel.
  6. Click on it and once logged in using an account registered on the Mac mini, you will be able to remotely control its screen and/or browse its file system. Enjoy!
